And now for the other dropping shoe in the global economic "imbalances" crisis:
March 9 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. trade deficit narrowed in January as imports fell and expanding economies in Europe and Asia boosted demand for American goods.
The gap between imports and exports shrank 3.8 percent to $59.1 billion in January, from $61.5 billion the month before, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. Exports rose 1.1 percent to a record. The shortfall with China, America's second-largest trading partner after Canada, widened.
A narrower deficit this year would mark trade's first contribution to growth in more than a decade, eliminating an area of weakness as home construction slows. U.S. demand for foreign goods may taper off as the economy cools, while orders for American products are likely to increase as overseas economies strengthen, economists said. |

Biff,
You do not think that the current feelings of anti americanism amount to Europe trying collectively trying to brow beat the USA into taking a different path? I do. The americans have noticed so obvious has it become LOL, EVEN the thick skinned yanks have noticed
I was merely suggesting below that Europe will find this approach utterly barrenn since the US will likely not give a damn
And thats what I think makes the debate so childishly bitter over here in Eurp with the result that Eurp has made itself largely irrelevant in what actually happens in the wider world which is, it may suprise you to hear from Waterloo, I think a bad thing. The world needs MORE eurp not the starvation rations it is on now as Europe gazes wistfully at its enormous fat belly that has sudddenly stopped growing any bigger. Lost again?

Excellent RHP!
This will be an active forum methinks.
Very timely, btw.
Can the WTO survive it's failure? It must, it will, but it will be very damaged....bent might be a better wrod. A lot lies in the US Congress at this time, not just the WTO, but other trade deals with the US.
More later. |

Thanks RHP. What is survival though? If bilateral trade deals account for ever increasing % of world trade then what is the WTO even if it still has a brass plaque somewhere?
The amazing thing about this allegedly awful world we live in is the benign actions of the powerful. The submission to something like the WTO by powers that do not have to and who are powerful enough to profit by not doing so, is I suggest amazing. Perhaps emerging powers like China or Russia will not be so benign? Maybe even India.
The WTO doesnt matter in and of itself, actual trade flows are more important. But to loose doha and relegate the WTO in the current climate of polarised anti americanism and a serious challenge from Islam would I think be a disaster. The Americans cannot be beaten anywhere, they must be woed. Why should they be beaten? no one can !! Why is that so hard for Europeans to understand?

I'd like to answer the second part of the question: "Can the WTO survive its failure?"
Yes, definitely. All international organizations such as the UN, NATO, WTO, etc., survived their failures!!.... |

As requested in the Topic Selection forum, here is the International Trade forum.
The forum is started with the following question.
What will the outcome of the Doha round look like and mean for international relations in a globalising world? Can the WTO survive its failure? |
