T'ful: Some just don't get it. Turney used her rank as a "survival specialist", and she is the *last* person (save for perhaps 'Mr Bean') that you'd want calling the shots on a mission like this. It is clearly acknowledged to be Intel Gathering too. This dame would sell her mother up the creek if it saved her skin, and her fags.
"Are they going to rape me?". Lady, what the hell did you come here for if you are going to ask that?
Why was she there? Anyone? Give me one good reason! |

With all due respect, will you Brits ever look on the bright side of things?...The most important thing has turned out in a very good way, that was the realease of all sailors. There was not enought celibration here.
If the woman sailor decides to make some money, get discharged and retire to raise her children, she deserves it. She has served her country and her family more than many other ordinary women and men ever have.
What's wrong with the public knowing about her story? I'm certain nothing she reveals will jeorpardize national security. People have short-term memory these days. They will scan through the stories, discard and move on with other silly things.... |

I am concerned that the Royal Navy allowed its sailors to be captured in such a way. |

T'ful: It was ITV, not the BBC who paid the bucks. It is somewhat astounding.
Mr Car writes:Do they honestly want us to believe that their sons/daughters (if still alive) would have turned down 100k plus for telling the UK papers about the same as they'd already told the Iranian version of Kilroy on TV? Sorry but I just do not believe them.
You seem to overlook a few details. Some already have, and it is illegal to do so. Always has been, which is part of the story.
As to why it took Parliament as long as it did to realize the regs is absolutely dumbfounding. I knew it from day one. Mind you, I was also covered by Queen's Regs, but hey....
Sometimes the term 'Intelligence' is a complete oxymoron. |

It would seem that the story has gone away, we never have had an explanation of why such an idiotic situation happened, why they were captured ,why the media were on the ship at the time, why they sold their stories, why the stupid BBC bought the stories!
The whole saga is unbelievable, it would seem everyone just wants to forget about it.
Perhaps we just don't like ridiculing those we elect to have in charge of us! |

Merlin,
Why has Mr Browne called for an enquiry ? He was doing it. Doesn't he know what he did ?
Perhaps he should ask the Iranians, they seem to be better informed on all matters relating to this incident.

Personally I don't have a problem with them selling stories.
Much of the revulsion to this has been fuelled by the papers who couldn't afford the stories.
Then we have the families of soldiers killed in Iraq complaining that its somehow a disservice to their lost relatives. Do they honestly want us to believe that their sons/daughters (if still alive) would have turned down 100k plus for telling the UK papers about the same as they'd already told the Iranian version of Kilroy on TV? Sorry but I just do not believe them.
The ministry of defence would inevitably have paraded these troops in front of the cameras in any case, to talk about how they only fessed up after being tortured, and how they definitely were just this side of a red line that isn't even officially drawn in a single location. People moaning about how much dosh they are getting are actually just somewhat envious.

T'ful: I was just thinking back as to the handful of folks who *did* defend selling the stories (they were scattered across various fora in many newspapers, not just UK ones).
What in the world world *they* thinking? Watch! You'll now see them deny they supported Browne's former stance. And of course, Blair et al have washed their hands of any involvement. It is up to Browne to take the complete fall.
Unreal..... |

Well listening to Browne something is just not true..........
We shall probably never know what went on but it would seem even Browne now thinks he was under some sort of a spell, in the cold light of day he thinks it was all stupid!
Everyone I know thinks it was all stupid!
Still he is having an enquiry into how they were captured and also into why they had the go ahead to sell their stories.
Thoughtful has better things to do! |

So is your 'source' intimating that the Brits searched the ship, and found nothing, when it was loaded to the hilt with explosives?
Most interesting indeed.
Does this mean that they were 'on the take'? Stupid? Working for Haliburton on the side? Or just overside and pighappy in salt water?
Maybe they had a deal with the Iranians to split the selling of the stories to the media, and didn't care what was on the ship?
Answers on the back of a grenade launcher, please.....
You see, Condor, there's a small problem. The Iranians intercepted after the ship had been searched. |

From a gov source:
We've had a lot of stories about stolen car shipments funneled in via Syria, and the Brit sailors were reported to have been investigating a ship filled with stolen cars when the Iranians picked them up. I also presume that these cars have been packed with more munitions than just a random assortment of 5-year-old Baathist leftovers to create the damage they have. |

Report - Kidnapped BBC Journalist in Gaza Murdered
BBC reporter Alan Johnston has been killed by an al-Qaeda affilated Palestinian organization, according to an unconfirmed Internet statement released to media organizations. (Ynet).
The British Foreign Office is “urgently checking” the report. (Reuters)
The statement was signed by the Palestinian Jihad and Tawheed Brigades, an organization named after an Iraqi al-Qaeda group. Responding to the statement, the BBC said it is “aware of these reports — but we have no independent verification of them. We are deeply concerned about what we are hearing — but we stress, at this stage, it is rumour with no independent verification.” It has not published the story on its own website.
The group said the British and Palestinian governments were responsible for Johnston’s killing, and vowed to release a video of the execution.
Sources familiar with Palestinian affairs told PJM that they cast doubt on the report, particularly since the group claiming to have released it was unknown.
The Palestinian Interior Ministry disputes the reports, saying that to their knowledge, Johnston is alive and well. (Jerusalem Post)
No other major Israeli newspapers reported the story on their websites along with Ynet.
Some in Israel are speculating that the statement could be a strategy to extract more money in exchange for Johnston’s release. |
