owl: my briefly considered short-list, in strictly alphabetical order: perm any 3 from 5 depending on your personal tastes and driving style.
Ford Focus 1.8i 16v
Mazda MX-5 1.6i (unless you can find a 1.8i within your price limit)
Peugeot 206 2.0 GTI
Subaru Impreza 2.0
VW Golf 1.8T Sport (not a GTI - chances are it will have been thrashed to death, if not by the first owner then by the second) |

The slower/smaller our car is on the US highway, especially California, the more likely we'll get into an accident and die. Traffic on California freeways is so fast that police cannot stop anyone for ticket. The higher objective is to keep the traffic flow smoothly. The slow poke is more prone to cause accident, unfortunately. |

I think the best value wafting machine today is a 3 year old VW Phaeton, bought privately.
Slight problem: VW dealers buy them, I think on instruction from the importers, to keep the values up. Or to hide the fact they're way over-priced new.
But £19k for a late 2004 w/30k miles and full history is better than a new loaded repmobile.
Totally modern , all-electronics and none of the Bentley rich-white-trash conotation (sp?)
PS: The Bentley Continental GT is the Phaeton with a fake radiator. |

Rather than replacing your rapid jellymold with a Moggy, why not buy a late 80's Roller for c.£12k, so you can waft to work in style?
Yes the Roller's upkeep steep, but isn't the depreciation on your modern rocket at least £3k p.a.?

In the days of my youth, I used to overtake far more often.
Three reasons, I think, for doing so less today:
Traffic densities are greater. Eventually it occurs to you that you may extend your car and your judgement to their utmost in order to overtake, only to find yourself, thirty seconds later, stuck behind the next moving roadblock.
Slow-moving traffic quickly accumulates a "tail". Once the tail is (say) six vehicles long, overtaking is impracticable no matter what you're driving (and there is a good chance, if you think you see a clear opportunity, that somebody further up the "tail" will pull out on you as you are going past).
Trucks are, on the whole, faster than they used to be. I wish I could say the same for agricultural vehicles.
People have the strangest ideas about overtaking. Once upon a time, taking part in an economy run, I found somebody on my tail as I turned onto what must have been a mile-long straight (the one that goes past Chalgrove airfield, if there are any Oxons contributing) with nothing coming the other way. He didn't overtake, just tailgated. I drove slower and slower, put two wheels almost on the verge, and eventually he committed himself to the overtake, just about when I judged it was no longer safe to do so. He had a fairly near miss with something coming round the bend ...

Now here is a question for you. Most of us drive every day. Some of us drive cars with very costly abilities to go fast.
How many times a week do you overtake another car on an ordinary two way road ? It is far less often than we all think.
I drive 10 miles to work on a two way a road every day. I rarely get to overtake -in spite of being daft enough to pay for loads of (underused) horse power.
Am consider trading in fast cars for really slow cheap cars and spending the saving on more useful stuff like vino. |
