Real men are drinking beer and watching baseball or US football. |

No maintenance has been conducted on the small river/brook near me for years.
Years ago it was cleaned and dredged at regular intervals, these days never.
Some street drains near us are blocked by roots and residents have been told the council do not have the money to clear them!
Yep! Those are real life facts! |

really? Dont they get tangled up or do they just stay away?
And it looks pretty ugly to have wire/string/fishing line all over your pond

A lattice of string over your pond will keep a Heron away. |

Pike taste nice, but Perch are best. A Perch however would be a tasty if prickly (spiky fins) feast for a Heron.
We have a Heron that swoops over every now and then and sometimes lands in the field. Luckily our Alsation hates birds and a Heron is his idea of the devil incarnate so he scares him off every time.
I am told the only other defense is a fake fiberglass Heron that you put in the pond so it looks like its fishing. Herons are anti social creatures and will never land near another aparently. Seems to work.
WS
p.s interestingly fossil Pike millions of years old are virtually identical to modern pike, like Crocodiles. It was never broke so nature and evolution never fixed it!! Still, it could taste better IMHO
p.p.s. "slaughtering" a wild animal that gets eaten spares another animal a lifetime of intense suffering in humanities main source of meat, our factory farms and agri business. (assuming we dont go vegi. I will never go vegi! ) Hypocrisy just doesnt do it justice. Shoot wild animals, eat them. Its a beautiful thing to do. As always my words are precisely chosen. beautiful.. Anyone watching River Cottage Real food heaven !! |

A Pike will live in a lake. But they will eat ducklings so not recommended pets. |

Moorhens don't do much harm that I know of. I killed one once, but only because it scuttled under the front wheels of the car I was driving. Herons, on the other hand, are notorious even here in SW20. They can clean out a fishpond overnight. Installing a pike is an attractive counter-measure, except that it would soon be the only fish in the pond, and in any case, don't they need running (stream) rather than stagnant (pond) water? Could you countrymen advise? |

Yes but slaughtering Pjheasants, Grouse, Woodcock, Partridge, Duck etc is OK - but you do need a game licence.
No one ever has a game licence (£4 from a crown post office) -they do have a shotgun licence- but usually you could nick most guns on any shoot for breaking the law for killing without a game licence.
Time was that the post office that sold the most game licences was in Holborn-where the lawyers lived. |

Yes, it seems you are right Merlin.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (WCA 1981) provides that all wild birds are protected and cannot be killed or taken except under licence.

Crumbs! Lucky Waterloo did his crimes in the 1970's ! No "bird" for me I hope |

I don't think that means it is not a protected species. It just means it is plentiful. |

I am sure they are a protected species. As are Herons. Ghillies are often prosecuted for shooting Herons when they thin out their fishing. |

The dog might chase off the cats Merlin. Mine keep the Heren's off my pond. And why are Moorhens not fair game? We shot loads as kids. Dont tell me they are protected or something are they?

Our ponds and the part of the moat are fuller than any time I can remember at this time of year- and those bloody Persian cats have just killed another moorhen chick- I'll swear I will shoot the bloody things if my wife goes out for a bit. |
