Floods in the UK

Large parts of England and Wales remain under water and others are expecting more severe weather to come.

lot of experts about I notice.

flood protection product standards

How much can it cost to design products to make a temporary dam with a sump and a pump on the drier side ?

What is the cost of the carpets in your downstairs?

Which is more?

It's very sad for all those affected.

The volume of rain may or may not be a result of global warming, and global warming may or may not be a result of human activity although I don't believe it is.

The flooding however is another story. It has been caused in the main by not enough maintenance of the rivers, canals and streams, particularly dredging and the clearing of other crap.

Also contributing is too much building in inappropriate areas, both on flood plains and other areas, whenever land is tarmaced over the water does not soak into the land, as Merlin has already pointed out.

Proper maintenance of the rivers and streams, sensible building practice combined with up to date and well engineered flood defences would have ensured that the effect of the volume of water that has come down would have been relatively minor.

I remember the flood defences being completely overhauled at great expense in Stafford town centre several years ago, they were allegedy built to be unbreachable. I remarked at the time that the only thing had been done was to raise the sides of the river banks, and nothing else that would prevent the "bath" from filling had been achieved. I have been proved right and it's been a complete waste of money.

a war perhaps? or just kill people? or throw some out? what are you getting at Merlin?

Couldnt we perhaps say that people who want the pleasure of living near water spend the few thousand pounds it takes to make their house flood proof?

I understand that there are solutions that make walls waterproof and have special seals on doors that close when wet. I shall investigate and post.

I mean, this is water we are talking about, not an atomic disaster or something!!

Still, the media MUST BE FED

So panic.....

WS

p.s. did you all notice how they (the thick TV journalists) kept talking about the Walham POWER STATION when in fact it is a power grid sub station (transformers, not a generator). The media lie about EVERYTHING because in general they are very THICK.

I think all media should be required to post background research somewhere for every story to ensure that the hacks at least have the courtesy of acquainting themselves with the basic facts before opining on issues on which they oftenn understand little or nothing

Few or none do at present IMHO. They lie about EVRYTHING because ratings are all that matters when selling commodity

Years ago rain fell. It soaked into the ground.

It gently soaked through the earth to the rivers which flowed to the sea.

Now rain falls onto concrete and tarmac, is carried swiftly in drains to the rivers. The rivers then flood.

We should stop building.Too many people+ too much building =floods.
